Walton School Repurposing
With the Philadelphia School District’s de-emphasis on neighborhood schools, those facilities, many of them handsome, historic structures, sit vacant. One such is the Rudolf S. Walton School in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Philadelphia, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Philadelphia Housing Authority acquired it with the intention of re-purposing it into affordable senior housing. The proposed design restores the historic exterior and interior public spaces and uses the classrooms modules to create generous, light-filled apartments.
