Asian Woods Pavilion
“To create a garden is to search for a better world”. The design of this restroom pavilion for the Asian Woods garden at Chanticleer was a true collaboration with the client, who travelled to Japan to photograph traditional houses in the midst of the design process. Chanticleer, a public garden near Wayne, PA, is unique in that the gardeners are also the garden’s designers, so the gardens are constantly changing.
From March to October, the Pavilion serves as the public restroom for the lower half of the Gardens; from November through February tender perennials make it their home.
Stormwater travels on rain chains from the roof to a riverstone infiltration channel that starts in the center courtyard and encircles the building.
Daylight filters through fiberglass sandwich panels that mimic Shoji screens. Like every other part of this building, they fulfill multiple purposes: transmitting natural light, providing visual and acoustical privacy, and providing superior thermal insulation.
